Holidays and festivals

Given the multicultural nature of Malaysian society, it should come as no surprise that Malaysians celebrate many different kinds of festivals and holidays throughout the year.

Traditionally, Malaysians celebrate many of their festivals by offering an ”open house” to which they invite family, friends and neighbours, regardless of faith.

During the month of Ramadan, when Muslims fast between sunrise and sunset, each bazaar displays a selection of fine food for Malays breaking the day’s fast.

At the month’s end is the Muslim festival of Hari Raya Puasa, when almost everyone takes two weeks’ holiday to return to their hometowns and visit friends and family.

Other notable holidays are the Chinese New Year, around February; Wesak, a Buddhist holiday around June; Diwali, the autumnal Hindu festival of light; and Christmas.
