Penang and Georgetown

Penang and Georgetown

The island of Penang, widely known as the Pearl of the Orient, is one of Malaysia’s most popular destinations. It is a pot-pourri of the old and the new. The capital, Georgetown, merges skyscrapers with quaint colonial buildings and ancient temples. In addition to offering a blend of cultures and foods to enjoy, there is a wide choice of excellent beaches.

Penang is easily accessible from the mainland via the Penang Bridge, one of the world’s longest, the international airport, or a 20 minute ferry journey.

Georgetown

Georgetown architectural contrastFounded in 1786 by Captain Frances Light, an East India Company trader, Georgetown retains much of its former colonial elegance. Of particular architectural merit are its ‘shophouses’ with their shop on the ground floor, internal courtyards and living accommodation above. As well as grand Georgian style buildings, Fort Cornwallis, built in the early nineteenth century is well worth a visit.

In contrast, there are striking modern offices and sleek new apartment complexes. Its free trade zone is home to growing industries such as electronics.
