The UK's ultimate guide to Malaysia property

Why Malaysia?

  • Strong economic growth and stability - Malaysia has an excellent record of economic growth, with gross domestic product (GDP) expanding by nearly 6 per cent per annum over recent years, which is expected to continue in 2008-09. It is one of the region’s richest countries, thanks to a mix of high tech industries and the growing contribution of oil wealth.

  • Quality of life – A well developed infrastructure, growing prosperity, natural beauty and climate offer excellent quality of life. The country was ranked 36th out of 111 countries by the Economist Intelligence Unit in its 2005 quality of life index table, the highest of the region, and not far behind the UK at 29.

  • Low living costs – Another major attraction, particularly for those considering retirement. To give examples, food is cheap, with bread costing around 40p, and eating out in a local restaurant costing about £2 per head, while a five-star hotel would charge around £7 to £16 per head. Furthermore, the relatively low value of the Malaysian ringgit against the pound, boosts spending power.

  • Year round warm climate – Malaysia has a tropical climate, with temperatures around 30ºC throughout the year. However, the highlands are cooler.

  • Beautiful scenery - With stunning unspoilt tropical islands, wonderful beaches and vibrant cosmopolitan cities, Malaysia has a wealth of attractions. It also offers an excellent choice of activities from superb reef diving to world class golf courses.

  • Developed infrastructure – Malaysia has an excellent highway network and good public transport, so getting around is easy. It also has very good healthcare, medical and educational facilities.

  • English is widely spoken – there are English language newspapers, radio and television. Most Malaysians speak two to three languages, including English.

  • Government encouragement of foreign property ownership – under its Malaysia My Second Home Programme, 10-year multiple re-entry visas and various tax incentives, including tax-free car importation and remitted pensions, are available. There is no capital gains tax on property.
